Just finished reading Dan Brown's latest. I don't normally read fiction, but I read this just to stay in touch with the type of propaganda that is being disseminated.
This book is utterly ridiculous. It's a great example of modern American kitsch. It takes all the sleazy ploys of American entertainment, and applies them to celebrate the lowliest aspect of modern civilization: secret societies, and all the pseudo-spiritual accoutrements of occultism.
This book takes an amazing turn however. It's been at least 250 years since the occult underground has been concentrating their efforts on discrediting Christianity. It's been consistent. Explore the teachings of occult philosophers, and you'll find repeated and vociferous condemnations of the Christian religion. Brown's last two works have been no different. Until now.
The surprising conclusion is that the lost symbol, or the lost "word" of the Ancient Mysteries is the Bible! So ultimately, it's not Buddhism, or the Sanskrit scriptures, as the occult has been suggesting for many years, but the Bible that holds the ultimate truth that must be unveiled to unleash the coming transformation known as the New Age, or the Age of Aquarius.
But it's not the Bible as you read it. It's not about a God as creator of humanity, who requires obedience to basic commandments of fairness and decency. No, it's the other Bible. Its hidden teachings, which have been cloaked for centuries in the esoteric thought of the Kabbalah. So paradoxically, the hidden teachings of the Bible, according to Brown et al., and the Ancient Mysteries are one.
Is that possible? Can the worship of pagan sun gods, astrology, magic and the practice of human sacrifice be the essential teachings of the Bible? No. Unless you reverse it's message, as the Gnostics did. Brown quotes William Blake, whose penchant for the diabolical is well-known, who explained:
"Both read the Bible day and night, but thou read black where I read white".
This was the practice of the ancient Gnostics, early Christians who appropriated the secret teachings of the Kabbalah into Christianity, and who reversed their interpretation of the Bible, such that God the creator became the evil god, while the devil was the true god, who taught man "liberty" from the laws of God, by leading him to the tree of knowledge, which is understood to be magic.
So occultists regard magic as the great power that makes man like a god. And this is the central message of The Lost Symbol. Which leads into the second premise of Brown's claims, that God is not a creative force "out there", but that man is god, and that all the Ancient Mysteries are trying to teach us is how to harness the latent powers of the mind so that we can become gods. In other words, man is God.
This of course is the central tenet of the Kabbalah. For all it's myriad superstitions, hidden in astrological and alchemical allegory, that is its ultimate message. In fact, according to the Kabbalah, the history of the universe is that of man coming to the knowledge that he is god. In the beginning, God wanted to know himself. Supposedly, therefore, he created an other by which he could come to know himself: man. But this other of god was in beginning unconscious of his divine nature. But man is apparently evolving in self-knowledge. This is expressed in the supposed progress of mankind away from religion, beginning with the philosophy of the Greeks, to the Humanism of the Renaissance, and finally the secularism of the Enlightenment.
Most clearly articulated in the New Kabbalah of Isaac Luria, who lived in the sixteenth century, it was communicated to the Christian world by way of Jacob Boehme, who became the central mystic of the European occult tradition. His greatest exponent was Hegel, whose brand of German idealism continues to spearhead the aims of the elite to this day. The end product of this evolution is the Last Man, Nietzche's "Superman", who can finally fully actualize the "truth" that he is God. This is knowingly the anti-Christ of the Book of Revelations, the blueprint of the Illuminati conspiracy, written by the most revered saint of the occult, John.
But the greatest affront of The Lost Symbol is it's blatant insult to man's basic democratic right to be informed and to check those in power. Oddly enough, the very principle that the American Masonic empire are based upon. In Brown's absurd universe, the elite have been protecting this ancient knowledge by keeping it from us. Why? Because, according to a posture ridiculed in a role played by Jack Nicholson, "you can't handle the truth". That's right, you don't have the mental fortitude to understand the hidden significance of occult rituals so you need to be lied to.
The central plot of the book is that a Masonic ritual has been video-taped, and threatened to be released to the internet, but Brown's protagonist assists the CIA and the chief Masons in preventing it from coming to light. The message is, next time your government cries "national security", trust them implicitly.
The truth has never been hidden. It can't be. Maybe it has been adopted by only a minority at times, but they have always been willing to share it with anyone interested enough to listen. The truth is merely this: to do unto others as you would they unto to you. That means compassion for your fellow human being, and in our time, speaking out against the oppression meted out in so many parts of the world by Western imperialism, and carried out cynically and secretly by the Freemasons and the CIA, whose more dubious activities Brown would rather choose to deny to have us share in his fantasy.

Great review.
I recently finished reading this book. Even though its a good read but I believe that Angel & Demons and especially The Da Vinci Code were far better than this one. The book gets boring somewhere in the middle or maybe its just that we already knew what's gonna come out from it.

The Lost Symbol is not a bad read and very enjoyable for large parts of it. It doesn't live up to the standard set by The Da Vinci Code, and it would wrong of anybody to expect that.

Good insight into Masonry...
Good review David ! Lately due to time constraints, I've not been reading fiction, but read the 'The Lost Symbol' only to know the truth behind Masonry.
'As above, so below', 'You are your own God', 'Apotheosis'- all point towards Antichrist. Someone/ something who will project himself at God towards end-times. He/ it will perform such acts of magic that people will start believing him/ it and start following him/ it. After reading the book a lot of things were clarified. May God save us from the Anti-christ/ Dajjal.
Those who think this is fiction are blind to the visible proof around them or just giving themselves false assurances that they are on right path. Christians are made to believe that Islam is their enemy, but the terrorism being carried out in the name of Islam has nothing to do with Islam at all. Those who know about it will vouch for it. In fact, in places, Muslims themselves are the targets of terrorism. Their holy places are attacked. The roots or the top order therein in many terrorist organisations are likely to be of other orders (dajjal) and just using the name of Islam. The unemployed / unintelligent Muslim youth are projected the religion in a false way and made to carry out wrong acts. And these unsuspecting people do not know who is actually at the helm of things.

What if this book is another example of showing the truth through fiction? What if the key to the "Ancient Mysteries" IS The Bible? That can be taken many ways. Did they say "The key to the ancient mysteries is Christianity?" Nope. They said The Bible. Which Bible? The King James? The Apocrophia? The Torah?
What if the Bible was the key to the ancient mysteries because it is the combined teachings and symbolism of the seven great cults?

In this novel, Langdon is challenged by a student saying that Washington DC's streets are deliberately made to form precise images. the Langdon character doesn't believe in conspiracies or magic...only Science. Welcome to the indoctrinated fool then.

Man is God?
What is so heretical about this idea that Man is God? It's the central meaning of the story of Jesus! He is a Man, he is a God, so where's the mystery? Jesus is Man *and* God and so are you, if you ask yourself "what would Jesus do?" and then actually do it.
Jesus said "let the first be last, and the last be first" so why not "turn the Bible upside down" It will be no more or less true. (hint: stand on your head it will be easier to read)

Dan Brown writes pulpy page turners that link, secret societies, intel agencies, spies and fanatics. Even if he subscribed to most of what he writes about, it doesn't matter-at the end of the day film studios make a movie and he gets another big check. He isn't starting a school or a religion. Chill out.

These suggestions that the books are merely "fiction" are naive. First of all, if you see the interview he did recently for the launch of his book, he clearly mentioned that he hopes these ideas would spread, as he firmly believes in their value. Secondly, Brown usually starts out his books with two "facts".
Much of what Brown uses is historical, or at least believed to be historical by some. What is invented is the context that he uses to popularize these ideas. So as someone else says, this is propaganda.
Worse is what Brown suggests as acceptable. In the case of this book, is that the CIA should collaborate with the governement to keep truth from the people. Yes, the book is fiction, but it's being used to communicate some rather evil ideas.

That's a beautiful but chilling Cree prophecy - so true. I think we are sons and daughters of God, manifestations of God, and we will bring our lessons we've learned back to God when we are done reincarnating. But we are not the whole of God, just a small splinter of God who is enjoying or learning.

Whoever collapses the $ (which could be quite soon) will have the power to recreate 'his' new currency and it will be no more substantial than any other currency, except in our minds....feeling the 'lack of it' or the 'wish to have it'. As long as we worship this insubstantial god, we wil be controlled by it, and the master of the banking system. So guys, it's up to you. What Dan Brown doesn't know about the Bible...
would fill volumes. The most important thing, however, is that the God of the Bible, YHVH Elohim, actually placed PROOFS of His divine nature and His authorship of the written Hebrew Torah/Tanakh IN IT!
I refer to that documented phenomenon called ELS codes (Equidistant Letter Sequences). These are names, dates and messages which are encoded within the surface text of the Hebrew Tanakh. They exist at various letter spacings in the same piece of text, often running in both directions, and occasionally running over from one book of the Tanakh to the next, even when the books were known to have been written by different people who lived hundreds of years apart from one another! These names, dates and messages often relate to the context of the surface text of the Bible, such as Isaiah 53, where we find the message (Isaiah 53:10) "Yeshuah Shmi" (My name is Yeshuah), along with the names of all of his disciples and all who were in attendance at his burial on the day on which he was crucified (according to the "NEW" Testament!).
See the books "His Name is Jesus" and "The Genesis Factor" by Yacov Rambsel, an orthodox Jew who came to faith in Yeshuah of Nazareth as a result of his lifelong study of the ELS codes.

You should read Apollyon Rising
Tom Horn's new book "Apollyon Rising" deals significantly with this issue and goes further into describing WHY the freemasons placed the lost symbol Bible in the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. The kabbalistic meaning beind this is astonishing and well supported in his thesis. I highly recommend you get a review copy.

Great review, Mr. Livingstone. I haven't read this book, but from the DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons, it's pretty clear what Brown's agenda is. There are so many writers and speakers today, from Michael Tsarion and Jordan Maxwell to David Wilcock, trying very hard to "promote" the bible by recasting it in masonic/kabbalistic terms. If you haven't been watching the TV show "Lost," they have done so to perfection.
I wish you would get invited to do more interviews. It's too bad most of the internet radio hosts are gnostics, end-times Christians or supposed "anti-masons" while also being cheerleaders for free trade and weak government, which is the whole purpose of masonry. It's pretty amazing how there's so much "anti-masonic" fervor today by people who worship masonic ideals. Masons have managed to throw themselves into the proverbial "briar patch" and seem to be getting away with it.
Are you familiar with Culture Wars magazine? If not, you should definitely check it out. The publisher (E. Michael Jones) has a couple of fantastic books like "Libido Dominandi" and "The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit". Many magazine articles and interviews at culturewars.com, if you're interested. If you can suspend judgement on Catholicism, you'll find a lot of interesting historical, political and cultural analysis.

I disagree, Dick, this is a lame review and tells me more about Mr. Livingstone than Dan Brown. Michael Tsarion, Jordan Maxwell and David Wilcock do not write fiction novels. Dan Brown writes fiction entertainment. His novels are formula...good guys discover a dark, nasty secret and the bad guys have to chase them down to prevent the good guys from revealing their nasty secret. Entertaining but hardly scientific material.
Anytime fiction writers weave in some religious references, the people who are heavily invested in their religion see an attack and they squawk like rubber duckies when one steps on them.
Dan Brown writes fiction and if you 'can't handle that' then don't read his novels.
